About this Book:
Featuring over 100 worldwide, personal stories written by passionate and inspiring individuals living with arthritis, and their supporters; parents, caretakers, and medical professionals. Ranging from heartfelt, hopeful, motivating, and empowering, to heart-wrenchingly eye-opening, these stories shine a light on the realities of everyday life with arthritis and related conditions. Readers will get a first-hand look at the good, the bad, and everything in between, from those who are experts in lived experience and clinical matters. This book is not only a collective effort to raise awareness that arthritis is more than just a disorder that affects the joints and highlights that people of all ages can get arthritis. Most importantly, it explains there are hundreds of different forms of arthritis that impact all areas of life in profound ways, from physical limitations, mental health, social lives, relationships, faith and spirituality, finances, and work and career life balance.
About the Creator:
Effie Koliopoulos knew something was wrong when unrelenting fatigue led to joint pain, muscle aches, and random bruises on her body that disappeared just as quickly as they appeared. Over time she noticed that the same knuckles on each of her hands became slightly enlarged and inflamed, which would later occur in her right wrist, elbow, and knee. Her initial symptoms were brushed off as just ‘growing pains’ and nothing to worry about. After all, why should a young woman with a clean bill of health her whole childhood have any concerns? In 2004, those issues became validated with a diagnosis of juvenile idiopathic arthritis, formally known as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. It wasn’t until over a decade later, while recovering from a complex total knee replacement surgery at age 29, that the darkness of her difficulties began to slowly lose its power. The time of solitude began a journey of self-discovery, and purposeful action and awakened a spark within to start sharing her story publicly and connect with people living with arthritis. After almost a year-long recovery, Effie launched her blog named Rising Above rheumatoid arthritis. This would be the beginning of many ideas to shine a light on life with arthritis, both independently and collectively. She was awarded the WEGO Health Rookie of the Year Award and is a recipient of the HealtheVoices Impact Fund which has helped fund her recent book project, Keeping It Real with Arthritis: Stories from Around the World. Her advocacy efforts can be found on AiArthritis, Creaky Joints, RheumatoidArthritis.net, NewLifeOutlook, Everyday Health, Healthline, and Good Housekeeping. Aside from everything arthritis and advocacy, she is a passionate storyteller at heart. Effie is currently working on other books and writing projects. She is a graduate of DePaul University and lives in Chicago.

Are you feeling alone and like no one understands what your life is like with arthritis? Well, after reading this book, you won’t feel that way anymore. You’ll realize that what you’re going through is shared by so many other arthritis patients around the world. We know what you’re going through. We understand how hard it is. And while all of our journeys are different and no two cases look alike, there are still many strong similarities with arthritis that will have you nodding your head in agreement and saying, ‘Hey, that’s me. That happened to me. I’m living that right now.’
Every single story in this book is heartwarming and impactful and it’s going to tug at those heart strings. And to show you what I’m talking about, I’ve pulled some amazing quotes from this book that are still bringing a lump to my throat because I didn’t realize how badly I needed to see these comments after coming out of remission with autoimmune arthritis for the 4th time in 14 years!
Suffice to say, this book was released with perfect timing and will carry me through the holiday season. Please make your purchase and help us find a cure!
YOU ARE NOT ALONE ON YOUR ARTHRITIS JOURNEY!
Thank you for sharing my story!
This book is amazing. I'm excited that I was able to submit my story, yet reading other stories about arthritis was such an awakening. I felt like I was part of a community. Hearing of others' struggles, as well as how they overcome brings hope that maybe this pain can be reduced.
I'm so grateful to Effie for writing this book, it's one that I've shared so that someone else could read, something that can possibly help them.
I'm one of the patients who contributed a story to Keeping It Real with Arthritis.
The stories provide a realistic impression of what life is like for people with arthritis, including the challenges and frustrations as well as the inspirational stuff!
This is a great gift for someone newly diagnosed with arthritis who may be feeling alone and overwhelmed.
It should be required reading for medical practitioners who support people with arthritis, to better understand what happens to their patients outside of the clinic.
Great book full of wonderful stories. Came very nicely packaged.
Whether you are newly diagnosed or love someone who is and want to know what life with arthritis is like or have been living with it for decades and are looking for hope and inspiration, Keeping It Real With Arthritis is the book for you!

This book is a one of a kind collection of stories from real arthritis patients. What they have to say about every topic, not just pain and healthcare. Arthritis affects every part of life, and in this book you will hear those stories. Keeping It Real With Arthritis is the perfect gift for any Arthritis patient, doctor or caregiver.
Loved the book. Really made me feel connected in a part of me that often alienates me from others.
Fantastic quality and such heartfelt and meaningful stories. Thank you so much for this.
I am one of the many contributing authors. Arthritis is an incurable and chronic illness. The stories contained in the book are very real life experiences when living with arthritis. And every one of us has a different and unique journey to share with the world. The struggles are real, often not talked about, and some are heartbreaking. I am hoping that others who read this book will become more educated and aware of what arthritis patients deal with while living with this disease. I am so proud and honored that I was a part of this incredible book.
Great book with 99 other amazing stories. I am both inspired and touched by this compilation. Beautiful artwork, too!
